Russia-Ukraine war: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces were holding key cities in the central and southeastern part of the country, while Russians were trying to block and keep encircled Kharkiv, Nikolaev, Chernihiv and Sumy.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday appealed to the West to provide his war-torn nation with Russian-made aircraft as the Kremlin’s military aggression continues to batter cities of the east European nations.
Zelenskyy made the “desperate appeal” while speaking to US senators on Saturday, said the chamber's majority leader, Chuck Schumer.
"These planes are very much needed. And I will do all I can to help the administration to facilitate their transfer," Schumer said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Russian forces took control of a psychiatric hospital in the town of Borodyanka in Ukraine's Kyiv region, with 670 people inside.
Regional governor Oleksiy Kuleba said, "Today we do not understand how to evacuate these people, how to help them," Kuleba said.
"They are running out of water and medicines," he said. "These are people with certain special needs, they need constant help ... many of them have been bedridden for years."
Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces were holding key cities in the central and southeastern part of the country, while the Russians were trying to block and keep encircled Kharkiv, Nikolaev, Chernihiv and Sumy.
“We're inflicting losses on the occupants they could not see in their worst nightmare,” Zelenskyy said. He alleged that 10,000 Russian troops were killed in the 10 days of the war, a claim that could not be independently verified. The Russian military doesn't offer regular updates on their casualties. Only once, on Wednesday, they revealed a death toll of nearly 500.
“This is horrible,” Zelenskyy said. “Guys 18, 20 years old ... soldiers who weren't even explained what they were going to fight for.”
