Michigan Primary 2024: Joe Biden wins the Democratic primary
Joe Biden's triumph in the Michigan Democratic primary.
The Michigan primaries on Tuesday confirmed that Joe Biden has secured victory with the lead of 10% of counted votes.
Biden won over his main rival in the Democratic primary, Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips. However, he also faced a strong “uncommitted” vote from some of his supporters who are unhappy with his policies.
Michigan, which Biden won narrowly in 2020, has become the focal point for this discontent. The “uncommitted” vote exceeded the 10,000-vote difference that gave Trump the state in 2016, meeting the target of the organizers of this year’s protest campaign.

Conversely, Donald Trump has secured victories in all five states that have held Republican primaries so far. He beat his last serious challenger, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, in Michigan, after crushing her by 20 points in her home state of South Carolina on Saturday. The Trump campaign hopes to clinch the 1,215 delegates required for the Republican nomination by mid-March.
Both candidates are paying attention to more than just the outcome of Tuesday’s primaries.

For Biden, the high “uncommitted” vote could indicate that he is losing the support of some key segments of the Democratic base in a state that he cannot afford to lose in November.
For Trump, he has struggled to win over suburban voters and college-educated voters, and he faces a dissenting faction in his own party that thinks he committed crimes in one or more of the legal cases against him.
Biden has already won in South Carolina, Nevada and New Hampshire. He won New Hampshire through a write-in campaign, as he did not appear on the ballot after the state violated the national party rules by going before South Carolina, which was supposed to be the first Democratic contest.

Biden and his White House and campaign staff have visited Michigan several times in the past few weeks to discuss the Israel-Hamas war and Biden’s response to it with local leaders. But those leaders, along with the “uncommitted” campaign organizers, have not changed their minds.
The “uncommitted” campaign, which started a few weeks ago, has been urging voters to choose “uncommitted” as a way to express their dissatisfaction with Biden’s handling of the ongoing war in Gaza.
