The privately-owned "Judy Anne" was carrying 14 people when huge waves caused it to capsize on Wednesday, said Davao province disaster-monitoring chief Roderick Milana.

The boat had been heading from Balut island to Sarangani island when the accident occurred.

One of the boat's passengers, Ranilo Olivo, 26, jumped overboard and swam to a nearby island but only managed to report the incident on Thursday, Milana said.

The coast guard and other authorities are searching the area, but there have been no signs of survivors or bodies.
