17 killed in LTTE-army clashes at Colombo

At least 12 LTTE militants and four Sri Lankan soldiers were killed in fierce fightings in the island nation's embattled north.

At least 12 LTTE militants and four Sri Lankan soldiers were killed in fierce fightings in the island nation's embattled north, the officials said on Sunday.

As many as two tiger rebels were killed in Andankulam in Vavuniya yesterday, the Defence Ministry said.



It said the army also gunned down three LTTE cadres in Panikkaneri and two others in Chandamadamkulam in Vavuniya yesterday.



In another incident, one soldier was killed in clashes in Jaffna yesterday, it said.



Citing a finalised military report, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said three LTTE militants were killed in clashes in Jaffna on Saturday.



Separately, the army gunned down two Tamil Tigers in North-east Welioya on Saturday, the MCNS said, adding three soldiers also lost their lives in the clashes.



On the Mannar front, as many as three soldiers suffered injuries and were evacuated to the main hospital.



Meanwhile, a 31-year-old businessman identified as Selliah Selvaraj was shot dead by unidentified gunman last evening in Horana, about 50 kms from Colombo.
