Fifteen Taliban fighters were killed on Monday in renewed fighting in the Musa Kala region, a militant stronghold in Helmand province, the coalition said. Its soldiers seized or destroyed weapons, items for making booby traps and propaganda material, it said.

Seven militants were killed in fighting in neighbouring Kandahar province.

The coalition also reported that three of its soldiers and two Afghan troops were killed in an ambush in the eastern province of Kunar. Seven Afghan and three coalition soldiers were also injured, it said.

The coalition also corrected reports that a mortar attack on militant positions in Pakistani territory had been approved by Islamabad. Further investigation revealed that such permission had not been given, the coalition said, adding that it regretted the "miscommunication".
