Afghan army and police, backed by NATO-led coalition forces, have killed 22 insurgents and captured 33 suspected rebels across the country, the Afghan interior ministry said Monday.

This followed eight joint operations in Faryab, Jowzjan, Balkh, Zabul, Logar, Paktika, Herat and Farah provinces, Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying.

A handful of weapons and ammunition were found and several anti-vehicle mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were defused during the raids.
Afghan officials often use the word "insurgents" to refer to the Taliban.
