There was no tsunami warning.
The moderate quake struck at a depth of 52 kilometres at 7:01am (0001 GMT) 190 kilometres southeast of Banda Aceh, near the site of a devastating quake in December 2004 that triggered the Asian tsunami.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity.
