China, Bhutan to formalise diplomatic ties

Establishing diplomatic ties and resolving a long-standing border dispute were on the top of the agenda when the top leadership from China and Bhutan met for the first time in Rio De Janeiro this week.

Establishing diplomatic ties and resolving a long-standing border dispute were on the top of the agenda when the top leadership from China and Bhutan met for the first time in Rio De Janeiro this week.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Bhutanese counterpart, Jigmi Y Thinley on Thursday expressed willingness to establish formal diplomatic ties between their countries.

Beijing and Thimpu don’t have a diplomatic relationship but representatives of the two countries have met several times to resolve the dispute over a border of 470 km.
