Magnitude 6.3 quake off Russian Pacific coast

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck on Thursday in the Pacific Ocean south of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, near the Kurile islands claimed by Russia and Japan, the US geological survey reported.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck on Thursday in the Pacific Ocean south of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, near the Kurile islands claimed by Russia and Japan, the US geological survey reported.

The quake hit at a depth of 49 kilometres (30 miles), the USGS said on an internet site monitored by Reuters in London. There were no immediate reports of damage ashore.
