US authorities yesterday charged Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, the son of a prominent Nigerian banker, with trying to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight as it was coming into Detroit airport from Amsterdam on Christmas Day. He had flown to Amsterdam from Lagos.
"The man in question has been living outside the country for a while. He sneaked into Nigeria on the 24th of December and left the same day," Minister of Information Dora Akunyili told journalists in Lagos.
"Nigerian security agencies are working hand in hand with international security agencies on this matter," the minister said, reading a brief statement and declining to take questions.
