An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale hit parts of central Japan on Sunday, sparking tsunami warnings by authorities, Japanese television station NHK reported.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The epicentre of the quake was about 40 km southwest of the Noto peninsula, about 50 km below sea level.
