A passerby spotted Anil Kumar, a vagabond, in a compromising position with the body, whose face was battered and disfigured with a stone. He immediately called police.

Kumar’s mental condition is said to be unstable and a magistrate directed that he be taken for a thorough medical check-up. The man denied killing the woman.

Police registered a case of murder against unknown persons but charged Kumar with legal provisions that prevent people from having unnatural sex — necrophilia in this case.

The body is kept at the mortuary for identification, adding to the 43 unidentified corpses found across New Delhi in the past one week.

This is the fourth case of an abandoned, mutilated body found in the city in 10 days. The other three had been hacked and dumped in south Delhi, a mystery police were trying to unravel.

Sources said Kumar told police that the woman was talking to him.

“He is mentally unfit and possibly suffers from necrophilia. It appears that the woman died at least 12 hours ago, but Kumar claimed that she was speaking to him the previous night. His statement is inconsistent and sketchy,” a police officer said.

“At one point he says she was known to him, but is unable to recall her name. The next moment he changes his statement and says she was a stranger.”

Police suspect someone murdered the woman and dumped the body at the spot.

“He claims he met her only an hour before he was arrested. Also, he claimed the woman was in love with him and used to come and meet him daily,” the officer said.

The woman has a tattoo — the letters “BKS” — on one of her arms.

“That is the only clue we have for now. Her face is beyond recognition. Special teams will carry out the investigation. They are accessing CCTV footage. Also, details of missing persons from police stations in the area have been accessed,” the officer said.
