India has great scope in automobile engineering. By 2020, India’s share in the global passenger vehicle market is likely to touch 8% from 2.40% in 2015. That’s why there’s increasing scope for qualified automotive engineers and designers in India.
The automobile engineering qualifies you to work in a branch of engineering which deals with the study of how to design, manufacture and operate all kinds of moving vehicles such as buses, trucks, cars, two-wheelers, three wheelers, earth-movers and tractors and also their respective engineering subsystems. To specialise in this field, you need to take up automobile engineering or mechanical engineering at the bachelor’s level.
There are a number of institutions in India offering courses in automobile engineering, including the IITs and NITs, Anna University - College of Engineering and Technology, Chennai, Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani, VIT (Vellore Institute of Technology), Indian Institute for Aeronautical Engineering and Information Technology, Pune. SRM University and University of Petroleum Studies also offer automotive design engineering and several other courses. You need to have studied physics, chemistry and math in Class 12 to be eligible for the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for admission to the IITs, NITs and many other govt and private engineering colleges.
You can also choose to go directly into automobile designing and there are also several institutes which are now offering courses in automotive design. This includes National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad, which offers a four-year graduate diploma.
