A PDP worker and a militant were killed when one of the latter’s colleagues opened fire during a scuffle between them in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday night.
According to police, three militants had turned up outside the house of Mohammad Ramzan Sheikh (50), a PDP worker and former sarpanch.
As Sheikh’s family resisted the militants, one of them, Shaukat Kumar, purportedly opposed the plan to kill him, and wanted to shoot his leg only.
In the scuffle that ensued, one of the militants opened fire and it hit both Sheikh as well as the militant, superintendent of police, Shopian, A S Dinkar said.
Sheikh died on the way to hospital.
Dinkar, however, did not confirm that Kumar had opposed Sheikh’s killing. He just said that “preliminary reports only suggest that one militant fired and it hit both”.
Former chief minister and NC leader Omar Abdullah condemned the “targeted killing of grass-root politicians at the hands of terrorists”.
The killing comes two days after the suspected militants attacked a police vehicle in neighbouring Kulgam district, killing a cop.
