The Vashi police on Wednesday arrested three people for the murder of an 85-year-old woman.

According to the police, the incident took place on Tuesday night when the main accused, Prashant Manore, 26, and his wife Dipika, residents of Vashi sector 10, had come to his relative Udit Saha’s home at Shivkrupa building in sector 15.

After dinner, when the Manores were leaving Saha’s residence, the complainant, Lawrence Fernandez, 27, was feeding his pet on the ground floor. Fernandez allegedly started to stare at Dipika, which irked Prashant, said police. “After a heated argument, the duo got into a scuffle. After a while, Udit, who stayed on the second floor, joined the fight. Prashant and Udit then started beating up Lawrence, his father Augustine, 60, and grandmother Marsilyn, 85, with bamboo sticks,” said Suraj Padvi, police inspector from Vashi police station.

“Augustine and Marsilyn suffered severe injuries in the attack. They were taken to a hospital in the vicinity, where Marsilyn succumbed to her injuries. Augustine is still recuperating in the hospital,” he said.

Acting on an FIR registered by Fernandez, the police arrested Prashant, Dipika and Udit on Wednesday morning. They have been booked under sections 302, 324, 504, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to preliminary medical reports, Marsilyn suffered severe head injuries. The police are awaiting the post-mortem report.

The trio was produced before a judicial court on Wednesday afternoon. They have been remanded in police custody till October 15. “We are trying to check if there was some other motive behind the crime,” said another officer from Vashi police station.
