Prisoners in Madhya Pradesh will be eligible for relaxation in their jail term if they perform yoga, as decided by the jail department recently.
Minister for Jails, Babulal Gaur told Hindustan Times that there is a provision for relaxation of sentences of inmates in jails in case they display good conduct while serving their prison term.
"The state government announces remission of sentences of convicts in jails on Independence day and Republic Day," he said, adding that in line with the policy it has now been decided to remit sentences of those doing yoga.
In other words, doing yoga would add to the good conduct of convicts and will be taken into account when their case comes up for remission of sentence.
"Jail is a correctional facility and doing yoga also makes the practitioner a better person, serving the purpose," said Gaur. He however cautioned that only doing yoga would not secure a remission in sentence.
"The convict will have to display good conduct amply," he said.
The jail department has issued orders towards this on June 21, world yoga day, said the minister. The order would be applicable on those being considered for remission on coming Independence day. Displaying good conduct gets reduction of sentence by 30 days to convicts, said the minister.
