Chief ministers of three BJP-ruled states and a senior BJP leader held a closed door meeting here on Monday to discuss “Garib Kalyan” (welfare of poor) agenda that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants all states ruled by his party to follow.

The agenda is expected to set common goals to pursue by the BJP-ruled states in a time-bound manner to ensure benefits of government schemes reach the last man in the society in accordance with the vision of Pt Deendayal Upadhyay, the patriarch of the BJP.
Madhya Pradesh’s Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Maharashtra’s Devendra Fadnavis, Jharkhand’s Raghubar Das and BJP national vice-president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe took part in the meeting.
“With my counterparts from Maharashtra & Jharkhand, we will work out effective strategy to ensure benefits of schemes reach the poor maximum,” Chouhan tweeted after the meeting that went on for about two hours.
He said they discussed various aspects of the agenda to bring uniformity in pro-poor schemes in different states. “There should be arrangements of bread, clothes, house, study and medicine for every poor. No poor should go hungry. The poor should get jobs. They should be self-reliant and not dependent on others.”
“Under dynamic leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi Central Govt. has launched a number of schemes to transform lives of poor & common man… It is joint responsibility of Central & State Govt. we build a pro-poor welfare state in true sense to bring smiles on everyone’s face,” he wrote in another tweet.
Chouhan said, “After through discussions, PM will be presented the final draft.”
He didn’t lose the opportunity to attack the Congress, saying the Congress had raised ‘Garibi hatao’ (eradicate poverty) slogan but it remained merely a slogan.
The idea to form a committee of chief ministers was mooted by Modi during his first meeting as the prime minister with chief ministers of the BJP-ruled in Delhi on August 27.
Modi, who was the chief minister of Gujarat before taking charge as prime minister, wants the BJP-ruled states to be a role model in implementing poor oriented schemes of the central government.
The committee of chief ministers was formed to study suggestions meant for uplifting the living standard of the poor. It will submit a report to BJP president Amit Shah.
The move assumes significance in view of criticism of the central government by the Opposition that it was a government of the rich. Also, the party is desperately trying to reach out to the SC/ST and OBC communities ahead of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
