In a “wave of generosity”, a Jabalpur builder’s teenager son spent a whopping Rs 46 lakh he had stolen from his father on his friends in the course of the last three weeks, buying them gifts or presenting them cash, police said on Sunday.

No case has been registered, as all those involved are minors, but police are helping in unofficial capacity to recover the money. The biggest beneficiary of the 15-year-old Class 10 student’s largesse was a daily wager’s son who got Rs 15 lakh, while one classmate got Rs 3 lakh for completing his homework.

Apart from doling out cash to around 35 of his classmates from school and a coaching institute, the boy also took some of his friends shopping and gifted them smart phones, silver bracelets and other expensive gifts.

Gauri Ghat police station in-charge, inspector Raman Singh Markam, said the builder had kept Rs 60 lakh, which he had got from selling a plot, in his cupboard. Four days back when he checked, he found that only Rs 14 lakh remained. He questioned his son, who confessed to stealing the money.

The builder approached police and all the boys who had benefitted were called along with their parents, and it was decided that they would return the cash and other gifts.

“The builder was unwilling to register a case so we are not taking any action against anyone. But we have recovered Rs 15 lakh so far and are trying to get back the rest,” the inspector said.

However, the daily wager’s son who received the biggest bounty is missing. “The boy is missing, and we are trying to trace him,” he added.

The builder could not be contacted for his comments as his mobile phone was switched off.
