Four-year-old Roshan who remained stuck in a 40-foot deep open bore well in Dewas district, about 150 kilometers west of Bhopal, for more than 34 hours, was rescued on Sunday night. He is being treated at a local hospital.
As the rescue team found it difficult to reach the child by making a tunnel in the hard rock presence of which impeded the rescue operation, by the night it decided to lower a rope into the bore well which the child held on to while the team members dragged him out.
Collector Dewas Ashish Singh expressed his satisfaction over the rescue operation and gave the credit of saving the child to the entire team engaged in the operation.
“The presence of hard rock slowed the rescue operation. There was a proposal to use dynamite in small quantity to crack open the hard rock. But we decided not to go for that option as it might have endangered the boy’s life”, he said.
The rescue operation was carried jointly by a 60-member-rescue-team of military’s engineering wing led by Col Ajay Kumar, 15 member-team of state disaster response force (SDRF) from Bhopal and local district authorities and police personnel.
Roshan, son of a farm labourer Bhim Singh of Umriya village in Dewas district fell into the bore well while he was playing in the area around noon on Saturday. The bore well where the boy fell had been dug in the farm of one Hiralal a few weeks back. The rescue operation started about 1 pm and continued throughout Saturday night and finally concluded around 10.30 pm on Sunday.
Roshan was checked by the doctors waiting on the spot and rushed to Khategaon hospital, nearly 12 kms from the spot. He will be later shifted to the district hospital Dewas or Bhopal for detailed examination, depending on his condition, said officials.
The condition of the child was monitored by a camera. He was fed milk through a pipe. On Sunday morning, a microphone was lowered into the bore well. Roshan said he be taken out and demanded milk. He also spoke to his mother around lunch time.
Four earth moving machines were put to work to dig parallel to the bore well to reach the child. Lights were set up during the night at the spot. The crowd continued to swell at the spot to see the rescue operation. The local villagers had made arrangements for the officials and members of the rescue team. They provided water, tea and some refreshments to them. They prayed for safety of the boy throughout the operation and cheered when the boy was rescued successfully.
