Angad Bedi, who plays former hockey star Sandeep Singh’s brother Bikramjeet in Soorma, says it was ‘surreal’ for him to shoot the film on actual locations. The film is a sports biopic that details Sandeep building his hockey career after being grievously injured.

He says, “Both Sandeep and Bikramjeet are of our age, so getting it right was a responsibility. All the sacrifices they made, their selflessness, all the care Bikram gave to Sandeep was an eye-opener for me. Bikram was a terrific hockey player, but injury hampered his career. He even invented new shots for Sandeep.”

Bikramjeet was also a player, so intense hockey training was a part of his preparations. He says, “Bikramjeet used to wake us up for hockey practice during winters in Shahabad. We used to do running, stretching, dribbling everything. Then he taught me scoop, slap shot and many other shots before starting drag-flicks.”

His off-screen relationship with Diljit Dosanjh, who plays Sandeep in Soorma, is visible onscreen as well. Angad says, “I spent a lot of time with Diljit and he is like my real life brother. I think he made me a better human being. Shaad Ali trusted me with a performance-oriented role.”

Angad was also in the news for the sudden announcement of his marriage with Bollywood actor Neha Dhupia. He says that it was planned on the behest of family elders.

He says, “Actually, we wanted to get married in winters, but our calendars were blocked till February. It’s not wise to leave good projects. There was less time and we also wanted to keep it private. So, even elders of the family asked us to not wait.”

He continues, “My father was of the opinion that marriage happens between two families and we should get to know each other. The intimacy suffers if the event gets bigger. The sacredness and sanctity too take a hit. My father has been a sportsman, Neha is from the industry, I am from both the fields, so it would have become very big. My father said people spend a lot of money on weddings but they shy from helping a poor kid, so if you want to do something good, do something for the needy ones. So, we went to America for charity work.”

Pink, Inside Edge, Tiger Zinda Hai and Soorma, Angad’s career graph has an upward journey, but he is cautious about signing multiple projects. He says, “The shooting for Inside Edge 2 has already started. It’s my conscious decision to not jump into anything just now. I want to see how filmmakers react to it. I am ready to carry a film on my shoulders.”

Will there be a film with wife Neha too? He signs off with a smile, “If somebody signs us then why not! We have worked in Ungli together, but our scenes were not together. There was a Punjabi film Rangeele as well.”

Neha tweeted about Angad’s performance in Soorma on Friday. “I am so so so proud of you my love @Imangadbedi .. the way you gave life to the reel life @bikramjeet007 ... you are a rock solid , sincere and reliable as an actor just as you are as a husband,” she wrote.
