In the anxious world of showbiz, actor Vidya Balan’s calm voice stands out. Despite being part of the maddening world, she will never be found fazed. The press might have gone on an overdrive writing about trouble in her marriage. But she has always replied calmly to such reports. Asked about her comment about trouble in paradise, she had said at a recent event, “Since you are telling me there must have been, because I am not aware of it”. Ask her how she stays unperturbed amidst all the vexatious reports, she says, “I don’t read what people are writing about me, I don’t need to.”

And with the wisdom that comes from being in the industry for 11 years, which she completes today, and having seen the best and the worst of it all, she adds, “You know, it’s a given when you are a public personality that people are interested in knowing about you. Today, with so much of an information overload, everything becomes news, there is too much media, every inconsequential thing also becomes news … but I don’t read anything about myself, I don’t know what the world is saying. So it doesn’t bother me.”

Adds Vidya, who will be seen portraying Geeta Bali in a cameo in Marathi film Ekk Albela, “I don’t read anything I don’t’ watch TV, I don’t check social media.. even though I am on Twitter and Instagram, I don’t want to know beyond a point what people are saying about me.” And it’s not because, it doesn’t bother her, quite on the contrary, because it does. “Some 8-9 years ago I decided that I wanted to cut myself away, because I realised something might bother me, I am not thick-skinned. I know myself very well, so, I decided I don’t need to know what others are thinking about me. I have learnt to protect myself... protect might not be the right word.. I have learnt to create a wall between me and whatever is unnecessary.”
