Bollywood celebrities lead a life full of admirers and fans, but if there’s someone who gets their undivided attention and endless love, it’s their pets. From taking the kitties and pooches on vacations to posting adorable pictures online, the celebrities are always celebrating their pets.
In the first part of our Celebrity Lifestyle series, we look at which actors have pets and what’s the story behind them.
Actor Sonakshi Sinha is very fond of her pet dog Kura. She often posts pictures with her dear little Pug on Instagram. “Kaala hai par dilwala hai,” she says fondly about her pet. Talking about his habits, Sonakshi once revealed that Kuro loves chewing on the shoes of her father, veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha.
Actor Akshay Kumar has owned two German Shepherds, Okie (who passed away in 2014) and Cleo. His son Aarav was very close to Okie. The much-loved dog had lived to the ripe old age of 14, and Aarav was 12 at that time. They had grown up together; in fact, it was Aarav who named Okie. Shortly before Okie died, Akshay had said, “I remember the day we brought Aarav home. Okie came and started sniffing, and somehow, even though I had got Okie, he got the message that Aarav was his master and he had to look after him. He would follow Aarav wherever he went and would sit beside him. Aarav and he have grown up together. Okie has become really old now and is 14. Aarav is 12. If we lose him, obviously it will affect Aarav as he is most attached to him.” The actor also has four pugs and recently posted a video with them on Instagram, captioning it: “Today’s workout - boxing with the cute little goons. Pug life, thug life.”
Actor Sidharth Malhotra spends most of his free time playing with his dog Oscar, a Boxer. He also feeds his pet himself whenever he’s in Mumbai. Sidharth calls Oscar his best friend. He even posted a video with Oscar to promote Akshay Kumar’s film Entertainment (2014), which was about a pooch. Sidharth loves taking morning strolls with Oscar; this helps him unwind.
Shraddha loves spending time with her dog Shyloh, a Lhasa Apso. She says that Shyloh is a great stress-buster for her. The actor’s Insagram feed has plenty of happy moments of Shraddha and Shyloh cuddling. She makes it a point to take her pet for a walk 2-3 times a week. “Shyloh has always been my stress-buster, so not having him around at the end of the day is difficult. I miss him way too much,” she had said while promoting Half Girlfriend.
Sushant Singh Rajput
When actor Sushant Singh Rajput was dating actor and co-star Ankita Lokhande, the two had a pet dog, a Labrador called Scotch. In the past, Sushant has often spoken about his pet. “Every bit of free time that I get, I spend it playing with my pet dog Scotch. It has been real long since I spent some quality time with him, and I don’t want to give up on that,” Sushant was quoted as saying during his Pavitra Rishta (TV serial) days. There are also pictures of Ankita and Sushant with Scotch. After they broke up, Scotch stayed with Ankita.
Actor Ranbir Kapoor doesn’t have social media accounts, so he doesn’t declare his pet love on Instagram, but he is crazy about his two dogs, an English Mastiff and a French one. He calls them Lionel and Nido. In May 2016, it was reported that the actor planned to move into his grandfather Raj Kapoor’s bungalow at Deonar, Mumbai. The reason was that the bungalow had a huge garden that would be great for his dogs.
Actor Shilpa Shetty adores her Persian cat Simba and her Pekingese dog Champagne. She often posts pictures and videos with her pets on social media and is a self-confessed pet lover. Shilpa also adopted a stray cat, whom she named Queen, for some time, after she found it soaked in the rain.
Actor Sonam Kapoor’s dog Cardu has a special place on her Instagram account. From celebrating Christmas to just lazing around, this celebrity pet has everything a dog would dream of. Sonam also supports various animal care organisations.
Actor Varun Dhawan has an adorable Beagle named Angle. The pooch not only throws cute tantrums, but also accompanies Varun to film sets. “I’m very fond of dogs. When was 10, I had adopted a stray dog,” said Varun. “There’s a British Bulldog in my building as well. They are quite different from other dogs (as they are more aggressive), but I became friendly with it in no time.”
Actor Hrithik Roshan has a beautiful Golden Retriever name Zane. He often posts pictures of Zane chilling with him and his sons Hrehaan and Hredhaan. “Zane has become my ‘hug buddy’. He’s always ready to give love,” said Hrithik. “Ray n Ridz (Hrehaan and Hridhaan) wanted a name that wasn’t an obvious dog name, and more of a human name. Zane is loving. He is a bundle of joy. He also seems wise. He is gentle and understanding. With Hrehaan, Hridhaan and now Zane, there is extra joy in returning home after a hard day’s work. My home feels complete,” said the actor when he was still married to Sussanne.
The actor considers his Golden Retriever, named Boozy, his child, as the pet was with his family even before his son Ayan was born. Arjun enjoys playing in the park with Ayan and Boozy. What he loves the most is when Ayan throws his ball, Boozy chases it, picks it up, and delivers it back to Ayan.
She lovingly calls her Pekingese dog Oreo. The five-year-old, says Rashami Desai, is very calm by nature, but gets excited every time the actor is back home from work. Oreo has a caretaker, as Rashami can’t spare much time for her pet, given her busy shooting schedule. The actor, of Uttaran fame, is planning to take her family and, of course, Oreo on a vacation soon.
Karan and his wife Ankita Bhargava are always posting photos with their chocolate brown Labrador. The couple got the dog when he was just 50 days old. They lovingly call him Naughty Patel.
The first thing that actor Vivian Dsena does as soon as he returns home is play with his cat Costa. The daily ritual is usually 15 minutes long. Vivian says that Costa has fixed this time with him as she needs proper attention.
TV actor Jennifer Winget spends a considerable amount of time with her white Labrador, named Breezer. On the occasion of Mother’s Day, she posted a cute photo with Breezer. The actor even took him on a vacation in Goa. She was earlier quoted as saying how much she enjoys the cute faces that Breezer makes all the time.
Comedian Kapil Sharma is very fond of his white Labrador, called Zanjeer. He lovingly calls him Zanju, and lets the dog roam around on the sets of his show, The Kapil Sharma Show. When martial arts superstar Jackie Chan visited the show, he was also caught playing with Zanjeer.
The actor-filmmaker has two Labradors, named Bella and Bonny, and a Beagle, named Zen. In an interview, Farhan Akhtar said how dogs act as friends, teachers and stress-busters for him and his family.
Actor Ajay Devgn is the proud owner of two German Shepherds dogs, Koko and Koki. He earlier had an English Mastiff, named Sher Khan, who died while Ajay was shooting for Singham. The actor is an absolute dog-lover and loves spending time with them, especially in the mornings, while reading the newspaper.
The Kerala-born rapper has a Pitbull pup named Riri. The little dog currently stays at his Delhi residence, and hasn’t had any public outings yet, as she’s too young to go out. Raftaar believes that dogs are the best stress-busters.
Shah Rukh Khan
Shah Rukh Khan had owned Dash, a little dog of a Japanese breed, who died in 2015. The actor has three more pet dogs — a Labrador called Hulk, named after one of his son Aryan’s favourite superheroes, and two Maltese called Juicy and Kai. In one of his interviews, Shah Rukh was quoted as saying that his pet dogs give him so much solace that he prefers talking to them rather than to humans when he’s depressed. The actor also said that his dogs can sense when he is sad.

The actor had owned two French Mastiffs named Myson and Myjaan, who passed away in 2009. Salman often takes to Twitter to post pictures of his pets sleeping. He shared a picture of two of his dogs taking a nap and captioned it: “Do kutte ke bachhe so gaye.” Another picture showing Mylove sleeping was captioned: “My love says good nite sleep peacefully.”
The filmmaker brought home this cute little family member in 2016 — it’s a French bulldog named Nobu Johar. And it was none other than KJo’s Student of the Year star Alia Bhatt, who introduced the little one on social media with a picture of her kissing him. “New member of the family....NOBU JOHAR...@aliaabhatt launches him on social media,” read the caption.
Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan have two dogs, a Jack Russell called Elvis and a Pug called Leo. Elvis has a special friend and a female partner called Margo in his own building. Leo was gifted to the couple by their close friend, actor Sonakshi Sinha. Not just this, Leo is named after Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio. “Both my dogs are popular and they are the stars of Bandra. We named Leo after Leonardo DiCaprio because he is so good-looking and my dog is ugly, but in a very cute way. So it’s like a juxtaposition, we both thought,” said Kareena. The actor once said that she isn’t scared of losing a good role but “the only thing I am insecure about losing is my dogs”. Awww, how cute is that!
In September last year, actor John Abraham adopted a three-month-old pup from an animal shelter and named it Bailey. However, the actor wasn’t happy with the idea of his new dog being called a stray. “Please don’t call Bailey a stray! I love her deeply. I wouldn’t want her to be called a stray anymore, as she’s part of my family now. She is very special,” John was quoted as saying. A month ago, John turned chauffeur for his cute dog and shared the video on Instagram. “Driving my baby back home. @abraham_bailey P.S : this was shot using the GoPro camera please do not try this on your phone. Drive Safe! Stay Safe!” he captioned it.

Recently, when Anushka sang the song Bulleya from her film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), Dude gave the most adorable reaction, a video of which she shared on Instagram. “Meet a new fan of #ADHM music!! Dude Sharma – mera kutta & im his Insaan,” she captioned the video post.
In February last year, filmmaker Farah Khan adopted two puppies and named them Gulab and Jamun. Adopted from the Mumbai-based NGO World For All, the two puppies — brown and black — are a brother-sister pair. “I couldn’t think of separating them. They’re brown and black and we wanted Indian names,” Farah had said in an interview back then.
Welcoming the little ones in her family, Farah also did an impromptu photoshoot with her kids and puppies that was supervised by ace photographer Avinash Gowarikar. Apparently, Farah, an ardent animal lover, and her daughter Anya, were keen on raising pets and had been visiting several adoption centres for the previous two years.
