The curious case of bra, bikini and Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra’s latest statements on wearing bra-tops and going braless may well be within the limits of her freedom but reek of hypocrisy and judgmental attitude.
Priyanka Chopra is easily one of India’s biggest stars right now: From headlining Emmys to Oscars and winning People’s Choice Award for her debut American TV series, she is taking India places across the globe. The actor, who has never shied away from flaunting her perfect bod - either on screen or on her personal social media accounts, has intrigued us with a statement.
Speaking to fashion magazine Instyle, on the sidelines of New York Fashion Week, Priyanka recently said she is shy and rather prefers a shirt over a bra. “ I think a bra should be kept hidden, layered underneath,” she said. Agreed, she has all the rights to ‘prefer’ what she likes but to end that with a rather universal statement is judgemental, to say the least.
When asked if she’d go braless, she told the same magazine, “If it’s in the vicinity of my bedroom, then yes—or, as long as people don’t know.”
No one has the right to object to what Priyanka wants to wear or doesn’t . But what exactly are we talking about here? For someone who has serenaded Bollywood screens in bikini tops for a decade, what makes her go all prude when asked about a bra top? Or is the interviewer to be blamed? You know, asking about ‘bra’, a word and a piece of cloth people prefer to keep under cover in India?
Soon after Priyanka made her Bollywood debut with Hero - The Untold Story of A Spy (2002), she featured in Andaaz (2003) where she flaunted her perfect bikini bod.
Fans saw Priyanka in bikini tops and bikini wear in several films including Aitraaz (2004), Don (2006), Fashion (2008) and Dil Dhadakne Do (2015).
She gave some iconic bikini scenes in Abhishek Bachchan-John Abraham-starre Dostana (2008).
She will soon make her Hollywood debut with Baywatch where she is likely to don a bikini.
As for us, we don’t know what to think about Priyanka supporting bikinis but thrashing bras.
