The case was registered against Amit in 2013 for raping a 42-year-old womanon the pretext of marriage under Sections 376 (rape), 419 (cheating by personating), 420 (cheating) and also under 66-d IT Act.
The complainant, in her statement, said that her family was looking for a suitable partner at matrimonial websites after her divorce. The convict had changed his name and sent a request on Shadi.com, a matrimonial website, to the victim. After accepting the request from 'Rajan Malhotra', their families started developing contacts with each other.
In the meantime, the victim found out that the convict's car was registered in the name of Amit Gadhoke. After verifying the details, she realized that Amit had used a fake identity to get married to the victim. The victim lodged a police complaint at Phase 11 police station.
The convict had also introduced his wife as his sister to the victim for which, she also had to face the trial, but was acquitted by the court.
The court awarded the convict seven years for rape, five years for cheating and two years under the IT Act. The sentence will run concurrently. The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 30,000 on the convict.
