A part of the Silk Board junction flyover will be closed for four months due to Namma Metro works, officials said.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Friday issued a media release stating that a part of the infamous Silk Board junction flyover - known for traffic congestions - will be closed for a period of four months owing to Namma Metro related works.

The BMRCL said 2.5 metres on both sides of the Silk Board junction flyover will be barricaded for “loops and ramp flyover staging work”. (Sanjeev Verma/HT Photo)

“Partial closure of the Silk Board Junction Flyover (Madivala Side),” the BMRCL titled the release, stating, “The Central Silk Board Junction flyover up and down ramp carriage way (Madivala side) will be partially barricaded from 21.10.2023 (2.50 Mts on both carriage way for 4 months) temporarily for carrying out Loops and Ramp flyover staging work. Public Cooperation is requested. Inconvenience caused is regretted.”

Bengaluru has become synonymous with traffic as it has recently faced several prominent issues, including a major holdup on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) last month as residents headed out of the city for the long weekend ahead of Eid Milad, a state-wide bandh and Gandhi Jayanti. That coupled with comedian Trevor Noah's first show in the city, heavy rain in some areas and Lord Ganesha idol immersion processions had brought vehicular movement to a crawl.

Officials are also in the midst of chalking out a master plan to resolve congestions in some of the key bottlenecks of the city, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is also a minister for Bengaluru development, proposing underground tunnel networks, much like those of Singapore, while experts vouched for mass transit systems instead. The Karnataka High Court even suggested a revision in school timings to ease jams, which was later disapproved by administrators and parents.

Bengaluru city recently also saw the opening of all impending stretches of the Namma Metro's Purple line, after which ridership skyrocketed. Residents and commuters flooded the metro trains to travel the 43-kilometre stretch in 80 minutes at a fare of 60.
