City-based theatre director Nisha Luthra unveiled her maiden book, Uns, a collection of poetry through a performance poetry session at the Rock Garden.

A music and dance recital were showcased as part of the performed poetry presentation by city based contemporary dance artiste Puneet Jewandah and Bharatnatyam performer Varun Khanna. The performance was based on the poetry in Uns and was conceived and directed by the writer Luthra.

Speaking on the occasion, she said, “My book depicts multifaceted aspects of human sentiments. The performed poetry was an apt tribute to the theme.”

UHBVN team attacked by residents in Ambala Cantt

Ambala A team of the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) was on Saturday allegedly attacked by some residents of Gwal Mandi, Ambala Cantonment. The team was in the area to look into reports fraudulent electricity usage.

Both the parties -- the residents and the department officials -- have alleged misbehaviour and assault charges against the other. Police said that an employee of the electricity department has sustained injuries and a case was being lodged. There had been no complaint from the residents at the time of writing of the report.

Law department holds first virtual alumni meet

Chandigarh Panjab University’s department of laws organised its first virtual alumni meet on Saturday. The guests for the occasion were professor emeritus Dr VK Bansal, professor JK Chauhan and professor Vijay Nagpal. The meet was attended by more than 100 alumni, who shared their experiences and cherished memories at the department of laws.

Capacity building programme concludes at PU

Chandigarh A five-day capacity building programme for the security guards of Panjab University concluded on Saturday. Held at the seminar hall of Centre for Police Administration, the programme was organised by PU’s Centre for Police Administration in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Centre. KB Singh, IG (retd), Punjab Police, was the chief guest. During the five days, sessions on techniques of public dealing, role and responsibilities of security guards, first-aid, traffic management, strike/protest/crowd management, fire management, use of communication instruments, patrolling and surveillance, yoga and meditation, etiquettes, healthy lifestyle and drill were conducted.

AIDSCON conference concludes

CHANDIGARH The 11th AIDSCON National Conference, organised by the Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society, concluded on Saturday. Society’s project director Dr Amandeep Kang said over 1,000 people from all over the world joined the conference virtually. During the two-day meet, 13 sessions were conducted, and over 70 guest speakers and panellists shared their research, experiences and expertise.

Traders share GST grievances before committee

Chandigarh A delegation of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) on Saturday participated in the first meeting of the Grievances Redressal Committee of Central GST, chaired by Aruna Narayan Gupta, chief commissioner, CGST, Chandigarh zone.

Hardeep Batra, commissioner, CGST, and Vinay Pratap Singh, excise and taxation commissioner-cum-UT deputy commissioner, along with officials and representatives of the city’s industry, were also present. CBM general secretary Kamaljit Singh Panchhi said some sort of compensation should be given to families of taxpayers, who died during the Covid-19 pandemic. He also demanded a one-time settlement scheme for assessment of all pending VAT cases on the pattern of Punjab.

CBM president Charanjiv Singh said taxpayers who filed their returns and paid GST in time should be allowed self-assessment and its acknowledgment should be sent to tax payers on the pattern of income tax. Batra shared that GST cases will be auto-assessed and very few will be taken up for scrutiny on the basis of returns’ audits. Gupta assured the delegation of recommending their demands to the GST Council.
