Ludhiana: Railway Protection Force nabs two snatchers
The alleged snatchers, identified as Sooraj Kumar, 25, of Hasanpur village, Uttar Pradesh, and Surinder, 30, of Ludhiana, were arrested while they were trying to jump off a moving train after snatching the purses.
The alertness of three Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel deputed at the outer signal of the Ludhiana station led to the arrest of two snatchers on Saturday.
RPF personnel also recovered two purses, silver and gold jewellery and ₹1,800 from them.
The accused, identified as Sooraj Kumar, 25, of Hasanpur village, Uttar Pradesh, and Surinder, 30, of Ludhiana, were arrested while they were trying to jump off a moving train after snatching the purses.
Police said assistant sub-inspector Pala Singh, constable Rahul and constable Kapil Kumar spotted the two jump from the moving Barmer-JAT express before chasing them down.
“On suspicion, the RPF officers caught both the persons. Two purses which had a mobile phone, gold and silver ornaments and cash were recovered from the accused. Moreover another phone stolen from a male passenger travelling in the same train was recovered from them”, a senior RPF officer said.
The accused stole the mobile phone of a male passenger while he had plugged it in for charging, while also stealing the purses when their owners turned their attention away from the belongings.
“When the owner of the mobile phone called, railway security answered and informed him about the theft,” a security officer said.
Both criminals were handed over to the local Government Railway Police (GRP) following which they were booked under sections 379 (snatching), 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code at Thana GRP.
Notably, special patrolling teams have been deputed at the outer areas of the station to restrict incidents of theft, assault and stone pelting at the trains.
