A 23-year-old labourer died after his co-worker stabbed him in the nose with a pen during a drunken brawl in Baltana, Zirakpur, in the wee hours of Monday.

The accused, identified as Lakhan Kumar, a native of Badaun, Uttar Pradesh (UP), was arrested later in the day, said police.

“Amit and Lakhan were consuming liquor on the roof of an under-construction building in Baltana on Sunday night. While drinking, they had heated arguments and in a fit of rage, Lakhan stabbed him in the nose with a pen, rupturing the windpipe,” said Deepinder Singh Brar, station house officer (SHO), Zirakpur.

He said earlier in the night, Amit’s brother Rahul had found him drinking with Lakhan and went to look for him again when he did not return home the whole night. On reaching the construction site around 6.30 am, he was shocked to find his brother lying unconscious in a pool of blood. He took him to the civil hospital in Dera Bassi, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The SHO said the accused was arrested on Monday and was still under the influence of liquor. He was booked for murder on the statement of the victim’s brother and will be produced before a court on Tuesday.
