Punjab: Four more mobile phones recovered from Ferozepur jail

Four mobiles phones were recovered from a barrack at the Ferozepur Central Jail late on Sunday evening.

In a complaint to police, assistant jail superintendent Kailash said that during checking in barrack number 8, a mobile phone with a SIM card was recovered from Namandeep Singh, who is an undertrial.

Three more phones with SIM cards were found hidden in different places in the same barrack. A case was registered under the Prisons Act against Namandeep and three unidentified people.

In the past week, at least a dozen mobile phones have been recovered from inmates, including gangsters, lodged at the jail. Searches have been intensified after police probe into singer-politician Sidhu Moose Wala’s killing pointed to a nexus of gangsters running their operations from behind the bars.

On Tuesday, the jail officials had recovered three mobile phones from a high-security barrack, where a suspect in Moose Wala’s killing was lodged before the SIT took him on production warrants. Two mobile phones with SIM cards were recovered from two jailed gangsters on Wednesday, followed by two more seizures on Friday and one without a SIM card on Saturday. In all these cases, investigation is on to trace the source.

Punjab jail minister Harjot Bains recently promised to free all prisons of mobile phones within six months. Bains, who was visiting Faridkot and Bathinda jails on Saturday, had also given directions to prison officials to conduct daily checking of jailed gangsters and classified prisoners.
