Punjab poll violence case : Simranjeet Bain’s loyalist former councilor, aide held

Police arrested a former councilor of Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) and his aide in a 9 months old case of poll violence. He is a close aide of former MLA and chief of LIP Simarjeet Singh Bains

The Shimlapuri police arrested a former councilor of Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) and his aide in a nine months old case of poll violence on Thursday. Former councillor Gurpreet Khurana is a close aide of former MLA and chief of LIP Simarjeet Singh Bains. Bains is already lodged in the jail in a rape case. The other accused who was arrested has been identified as Rajinder Singh alias Raja Phillaur. Inspector Pramod Kumar, station house officer (SHO)at police station Shimlapuri, said that the police arrested the accused from different locations following a tip-off.

The supporters of Bains and his arch rival Kamaljit Karwal of Congress had allegedly clashed in Atam Nagar constituency on February 7, ahead of Punjab assembly polls. Karwal had alleged that Bains along with his supporters had allegedly opened fire with his weapon. An FIR under sections 307, 427, 148, 149, 506, 188 of Indian Penal Code, Sections 25, 54, 59 of Arms Act, Section 127 of representation of people act and Section 3 of Epidemic act has been lodged against Bains, his son Ajaypreet Singh Bains, his two brothers Paramjit Singh Bains, Councilors Harvinder Kaler, Bitta, Swarndeep Singh Chahal, former councilor Gurpreet Khurana and others at police station Shimlapuri.

On October 18, the Ludhiana police had brought former MLA and Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) chief Simarjeet Singh Bains on a production warrant in the case for questioning.
