Safina, wife of former deputy chief minister and MP Muzaffar Hussain Baig, joined the party at its headquarters, Nawa-e-Subh in Srinagar. Baramulla legislator Javeed Baig and minister Javeed Dar were also present.

“I have joined the NC for the sake of people. I am impressed by the leadership of CM Omar Abdullah and the way he is running the government in the present circumstances,” she said.

She had unsuccessfully contested the 2024 J&K assembly elections as an Independent candidate from the Wagoora-Kreeri constituency in Baramulla.

Hundreds of workers, who had come from the north Kashmir’s Baramulla and Sangrama areas, were also present on the occasion.

Party leaders said her induction would strengthen the NC in Baramulla and the neighbouring Kreeri Wagoora belt, where her family holds considerable influence.

Safina won the 2020 DDC elections as an independent candidate before securing the chairperson seat with backing from the People’s Conference and the Apni Party.

She and Muzaffar Baig were later briefly associated with Sajad Lone’s People’s Conference and even supported his Lok Sabha campaign. They later distanced themselves from the party.

A lawyer by profession, Safina’s tenure as DDC chairperson was marked by securing several developmental projects for north Kashmir.

It remains unclear if former deputy CM Baig will follow his wife into the National Conference.
