Among one of the first from the helicopter unit of the Indian Air Force to join the Indian Peace Keeping Force (Sri Lanka), Gill was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal by the President of India for his exemplary services, devotion to duty and distinguished services of a high order.

“The officer flew over 700 missions under the most hazardous and hostile conditions. He undertook the widest variety of operations as part of Operation Pawan, ranging from the most daring casualty evacuations by day and night. With his ability to remain cool of ever elusive enemy and constant ground fire, is the example of the ultimate in professionalism,” the award mentioned.

The officer is survived by his wife, Parvinder Gill, and daughter Hazel Kaur, 18. He had not been keeping well for a long time and had also undergone a liver transplant in July last year.

“After his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the Command Hospital in Panchkula. He was in coma for over a month. Slowly, his organs started failing and on Friday, he suffered heart failure,” Parvinder said. Gill was on Saturday cremated in his hometown Mohali at the Phase 7 Industrial Area cremation ground with full military honours. Several senior IAF officers paid their respects to the deceased officer.
