Man held for running illegal abortion clinic in Badshahpur

A man has been arrested in Gurugram for allegedly conducting illegal abortions at an unauthorised clinic. The suspect, Ramendra Nath Biswas, was caught accepting money from a decoy patient seeking an abortion. His clinic was sealed after a raid by health department officials, and an FIR was registered against him under relevant sections of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, National Medical Commission (NMC) Act and Section 336 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Gurugram: A 45-year-old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly conducting illegal abortions at an unauthorised clinic at Badshahpur in Gurugram, police said on Saturday.

The suspect, identified as Ramendra Nath Biswas , was arrested after he accepted money from a decoy patient who sought to terminate her pregnancy, and his clinic was sealed after a raid by health department officials, said police officers.

According to investigators, health department officials received a tip-off about the activities of the suspect after which they sent a pregnant woman, as a decoy patient to the doctor to terminate her pregnancy.

Dr Harish Kumar, medical officer of Civil hospital, said that once the decoy patient met the suspect, the latter gave her the (medical termination of pregnancy) MTP kit to abort her pregnancy. Later, the suspect was arrested .

“Serial numbers of the recovered currency notes from the suspect were matched with the currency notes given to the decoy patient”, said Dr Kumar.

On Dr Kumar’s complaint, an FIR was registered against the suspect under relevant sections of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, National Medical Commission (NMC) Act and Section 336 (acting rashly or negligently as to endanger human life or personal safety of others) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Badshahpur police station on Friday night, said police.

According to Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer (CMO), Gurugram, the suspect was only a 12th pass, had no expertise in the medical field and his Raj Laxmi Clinic was not registered under the MTP Act.

Preet Pal Sangwan, assistant commissioner of police (crime), said the suspect was produced before a court on Saturday and was sent to 14 days of judicial custody. Statements of some of his patients who visited him in the past and a few of his neighbours were also being recorded, he added.
