A Samajwadi Party (SP) worker from Kanpur, who had allegedly made a bid to immolate himself on Vidhan Sabha Marg in front of Lok Bhavan building in the state capital on Thursday afternoon, was shifted to SIPS Hospital from the Civil Hospital for better treatment on Friday night , said police officials here on Saturday.
The police said the doctors stated that he suffered nearly 30 percent burns in the incident and was still undergoing treatment. Station house officer (SHO), Hazratganj police station, Shyam Babu Shukla said the SP worker identified as Narendra Singh aka Pintu, 40, sprinkled some inflammable liquid and set himself on fire.
He said the alert police personnel in civvies deployed near the Lok Bhavan gate, however, doused the fire soon after Singh’s act. He said Singh was said to be upset over the SP’s defeat in the recently concluded UP assembly elections.
“Narendra Singh was taken to Civil Hospital in a police van. He sustained burn injuries on his neck, face and forearms but was out of danger,” Shukla said. He said Singh was presently undergoing treatment at SIPS Hospital in Chowk and his condition was stated to be stable. Singh reportedly had raised political slogans before he set himself afire. Police had recovered a membership card of the Samajwadi Party from his possession.
