KGMU docs save 3-yr-old suffering from rare condition
The condition, related to stress, is very rare and perhaps it was the first such case in the state capital, said doctors.
LUCKNOW In a surgical feat, doctors at the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) removed 400 grams of hair mass from the abdomen of a three-year-old Basti-based girl on Saturday.
Experiencing vomiting and excessive weakness, the girl was suffering from Rapunzel syndrome, a rare condition in which a large ball of hair gets stuck in the stomach and spreads through the small intestine. Prof JD Rawat, head of the department of paediatric surgery, said, “On examination, a ball of hair was visible. We decided to remove it surgically.”
He added that this condition, related to stress, is very rare and perhaps it was the first such case in the state capital. Along with Prof Rawat, Dr Sudhir Singh, and Dr Nirpeksh Tyagi, Dr GP Singh, Dr Premraj Singh, were also part of the operating team.
