5,500 booked by Pune police in preventive action ahead of civic polls

The police commissioner said individuals with criminal backgrounds, including candidates contesting the elections, will be kept under close surveillance

Ahead of civic elections, as many as 5,500 persons have been booked under preventive provisions so far, police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said on Tuesday.

Kumar said, “The police administration has accorded top priority to maintaining public order during the election period. A series of measures is being put in place to prevent disturbances and curb unlawful activities linked to the civic polls.”

The police commissioner said individuals with criminal backgrounds, including candidates contesting the elections, will be kept under close surveillance. Special teams have been formed to prevent attempts to exert direct or indirect pressure on voters and to curb malpractices during the election process.

“Strict action will be taken against anyone found attempting to disrupt law and order or influence voters unlawfully,” Kumar said.

Around 6,500 police officers and personnel will be deployed across Pune city, supported by 1,200 additional personnel drawn from across the state, along with home guards during elections. To strengthen the security arrangement, eight companies of the State Reserve Protection Force (SRPF) will also be stationed in the city.
