Los Angeles Knight Riders beat Washington Freedom by 1 run

Commentary

4:18 AM IST A night to remember - The moment Los Angeles Knight Riders have dreamed of is finally here. Jason Holder joins his teammates on the podium as they lift the Major League Cricket trophy together amid a shower of confetti and deafening cheers around the Coliseum. The celebrations are in full swing as the players pose with the silverware, gather for the traditional champions' photograph and then capture plenty of selfies in front of the Champions backdrop, soaking in a moment they will cherish forever. That brings the curtain down on what has arguably been the finest edition of Major League Cricket yet. The standard of cricket continues to soar, the crowds keep getting bigger, and the sport's growth in the United States shows no signs of slowing down. We hope you have enjoyed our coverage throughout MLC 2026, and we can't wait to welcome you back next season for even more thrilling cricket. Until then, it's goodbye and thank you for joining us. Adios!
4:32 AM IST Time for the championship medals - The presentation ceremony rolls on as the LA Knight Riders players line up to receive their winners' medals after a memorable championship triumph. Smiles are everywhere in the purple camp, but before they step onto the podium, the victorious skipper, Jason Holder, is up for a quick chat. Holder says it is an awesome feeling and everybody took responsibility when it was their time to raise their hands. Jason adds that it is not about an individual but it was about the team as one and coach Bravo did amazing in bonding the team as one. Holder mentions that the biggest message to the boys was to enjoy what they are doing and things will fall into their way automatically. Holder believes that this title means everything for the franchise, as they've also had the new stadium for them, and despite not having good results there, they're proud of winning the title at the end.
4:22 AM IST Most Valuable Player of the Season - Undoubtedly, it goes to Sunil Narine for his outstanding effort. 18 wickets with an economy of 4.74. Narine is also the PLAYER OF THE FINAL for his 3/13. He says it is difficult to put his emotions into words as he is still trying to embrace the moment after LA Knight Riders' title triumph. Reflecting on the journey, Narine says the emotions stem from the struggles of the franchise over the first three seasons, when a squad of such quality failed to make its mark. He credits the coaches, players and support staff for coming together with a clear plan this season, adding that the players executed those plans brilliantly throughout the tournament. On continuing to improve year after year, Narine says it all comes down to hard work. He believes the number of matches a player has already played does not matter, as everyone still has to put in the hours. He adds that the team set its sights on this moment from the very first game of the season, with everyone buying into the vision, making it a complete team effort rather than an individual achievement. Speaking about bowling in the PowerPlay, Narine credits head coach Dwayne Bravo for the idea. He says Bravo comes up with bold plans because of the way he reads the game, and the players simply have to trust him and execute. Narine adds that the strategy worked throughout the tournament and hopes it continues to bring success in the future. On receiving the award, Narine says it means a great deal not only to him but also to the team, the support staff and his family. He hopes to continue performing at this level and, most importantly, stay in good health.
4:20 AM IST Bart King Award - Andries Gous wins the award and is the Domestic Player of the Season. He is also the leading run-scorer of the season with 547 runs in 13 innings. He says that he is really proud of himself for playing in such a manner and scoring big throughout the tournament. Gous says that he was batting well from the start and he just kept going from step to step and on a roll that helped him score big. Gous shares that Freedom is really close to his heart and he is determined to do well for them in the coming seasons as well.
4:22 AM IST Under-23 Player of the Season - Matthew Tromp wins the award for his exceptional performances. He scored 309 runs in 11 innings. He says winning the tournament is an incredible feeling. He adds that he has nothing to complain about and describes the triumph as simply brilliant. Reflecting on his performances, Tromp credits the coaching staff for their faith in him throughout the season. He says he began the campaign batting at No. 9, but the coaches saw something special in him and gave him greater responsibility, and he backed himself to make the most of the opportunity. Speaking about playing in Major League Cricket, Tromp says it is the biggest stage of his career. He explains that his approach is to keep things simple, trust his processes and execute whenever the opportunity comes. On handling the occasion, Tromp admits he is nervous when he walks out to bat with the crowd creating a loud atmosphere. However, he says he focuses on enjoying the moment, staying grateful for the opportunity and embracing the experience.
4:02 AM IST With the action done and dusted, the presentation ceremony begins. The match officials are the first to be recognised, receiving special mementos for their services.
3:58 AM IST The captain of Washington Freedom - Steve Smith says that they thought this total was gettable and restricting LAKR to 164 was brilliant, but losing 3 in the Powerplay had them on the back foot. Smith says he is proud of his side irrespective of this result. Smith mentions that they just had the plan to play the game that is in front of them and forget about the past. Smith closes by praising the side and saying playing 3 finals in a row is a brilliant achievement and says a lot about the team's character.
3:56 AM IST Presentation Time...
3:56 AM IST Narine sets it up, Schalkwyk finishes it - LA Knight Riders turned to Sunil Narine for early breakthroughs, and he delivered with three Powerplay wickets to put Washington Freedom on the back foot. Freedom rebuilt through a crucial partnership, but Jason Holder broke the stand and added two more key scalps to swing the momentum back in LAKR's favour. Obus Pienaar's stunning late assault threatened to snatch the title away, but Shadley van Schalkwyk removed him at the crucial moment with just eight needed from five balls. He then held his nerve to defend the remaining runs in a tense final over and seal LA Knight Riders' maiden MLC title.
3:53 AM IST Freedom pulled things back superbly - Earlier in the game, LA Knight Riders were cruising at 101/2 after Andre Fletcher and Colin Munro added 66 for the opening wicket, with both scoring in the 40s. Matthew Tromp's 39 off 21 was the only other meaningful contribution as the big names failed to deliver. LAKR also lost two wickets in the same over on four separate occasions, collapsing to 164 all out. Washington Freedom went wicketless in the PowerPlay but responded brilliantly thereafter. Ben Dwarshuis led the way with three wickets, while Nikhil Chaudhary, Rachin Ravindra and Owen each picked up two, with Saurabh Netravalkar adding one. They also fielded superbly and, despite dropping a couple of catches and Nikhil conceding 26 in one over, would have happily taken a target of 165 at the start of the evening.
3:54 AM IST One of the legends of this format - Sunil Narine says that the first three seasons of this tournament are incredibly tough. He mentions that once a team reaches this deep into the competition, winning becomes an absolute necessity. Narine firmly credits the ultimate triumph to a total team effort rather than individual brilliance, labeling their championship run as a product of God’s blessings. Narine expresses deep gratitude to the Almighty for gifting him the required skills and allowing him to perform at the highest level at this stage of his career.
3:52 AM IST Chat with the Spiceman - Andre Fletcher admits that the championship game was an absolute nail-biter from start to finish. Fletcher shares that from the exact moment he left the field, he was continuously praying and praying for a positive outcome, ultimately expressing deep gratitude to God that the team managed to pull through and secure the historic victory.
3:46 AM IST The big man, Dre Russ - Andre Russell dismisses any talk of aging, stating that age is just a number and experience means everything out on the field. He mentions that the entire squad shows immense experience and plays collectively as a team, making this tight and lovely match a well-deserved reason to celebrate. Russell admits that every single time he wins a trophy for this franchise, he gets teary-eyed, explaining that playing for an organization for over a decade carries immense personal meaning because of the deep trust they continue to show in him. Dre Russ expresses immense happiness at bringing another prestigious title home to the family and looks forward to celebrating the historic moment with his brothers.
3:44 AM IST One of the Caribbean stars - Rovman Powell states that capturing the championship trophy means absolutely everything to him after years of playing for the Knight Riders franchise without winning a title. He reveals that the team sat down together just yesterday, making a collective pact that, having advanced this far, they must go all the way and lift the ultimate crown. Powell signs off with a promise, stating that the squad is definitely going to party in true West Indian style.
3:43 AM IST Next up is Matthew Tromp - Tromp reveals that winning the championship means absolutely everything to the squad. He shares a powerful behind-the-scenes moment from before the playoffs, where veteran leader Dwayne Bravo gathered the team to declare that they were playing specifically to honor the legendary legacies of T20 titans Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. Tromp admits that this rallying cry deeply motivated everyone to step up for their iconic teammates, though he confesses that walking out to the middle under such immense stakes made him feel far more nervous than he had been at any other point in the tournament.
3:43 AM IST LAKR's Head Coach - Dwayne Bravo describes the victory as a truly great feeling and a proud achievement for the entire playing group. Bravo lauded the collective effort of the squad in reaching the pinnacle of the tournament. Before wrapping up his thoughts, Bravo signs off with a heartfelt gesture by dedicating the historic championship trophy to his longtime friend and fellow West Indian icon, Kieron Pollard.
3:43 AM IST Time for some interviews now - Reflecting on the magnitude of the occasion, Shadley van Schalkwyk mentions the importance of keeping things simple and detached from the final result. Shadley shared a deeply personal milestone, recalling how his American cricket journey began just five years ago when he arrived with nothing but two suitcases. Expressing deep gratitude, Van Schalkwyk noted how kind God has been to him throughout an incredible career trajectory that has seen him rise from the Minor League Cricket ranks all the way to the T20 World Cup and onto this grand championship stage.
3:39 AM IST A chase full of twists and heartbreaks - Washington Freedom's chase got off to the worst possible start as Mitchell Owen, Rachin Ravindra and Steve Smith all fell inside the PowerPlay, leaving them firmly on the back foot. Andries Gous and Nikhil Chaudhary steadied the innings with a crucial 65-run partnership, only for another collapse to follow as Freedom slipped from 94/3 to 109/6. Just when the contest looked over, Obus Pienaar produced an extraordinary counterattack. Refusing to give in, he unleashed some sensational power-hitting to bring up his maiden T20 century and reduce the equation to just eight runs from five balls. But his dismissal off the very next delivery proved decisive, leaving the lower order with too much to do as LAKR held on for a dramatic title triumph.
3:33 AM IST A fairy tale finish for LAKR - The triumph is made even sweeter for Los Angeles Knight Riders, who not only reach the playoffs for the first time in Major League Cricket history but go all the way to lift their maiden title. They seized the moment when it mattered most and completed a remarkable championship run. Spare a thought for Washington Freedom, though. One of the standout teams all season, they once again fall agonisingly short on the biggest stage. After losing last year's final to MI New York by just five runs, they suffer another heartbreaking defeat, this time by the narrowest of margins.
3:31 AM IST Purple reign at the Coliseum - Absolute scenes at the Coliseum! It's pure purple delight as Los Angeles Knight Riders clinch their maiden Major League Cricket title after a breathtaking final that swung one way and then the other. With three runs to defend off the final ball, Shadley van Schalkwyk kept his nerve to seal a famous triumph and finally ended up on the right side of a last-over finish after falling short in his previous three attempts.

Shadley van Schalkwyk to Lahiru Milantha, 1 run

ONE PLUS OUT! LAHIRU MILANTHA IS RUN OUT! MAIDEN MLC TITLE FOR LAKR! LAKR WIN BY 1 RUN. Shadley bowls in a perfect yorker, on middle and off, Lahiru Milantha tucks this to the mid on region and just starts running, probably thinking about two with the fielder set in the deep. Shadley van Schalkwyk gives it a chase, runs for his life, puts in a slide, picks it up and throws this to the keeper's end. Jahmar Hamilton gathers this in front of the stumps and breaks them. The leg umpire did not feel the need to send this upstairs and gave it OUT on the field itself.

3:23 AM IST 3 needed in 1 now. Still, all three results are possible here. Jason Holder is taking his time to get his field right here.

Hits this decent enough but towards the right of Jason Holder at long on. Holder runs in from the fence and holds onto a key catch that removes Ian Holland and keeps it as a dot.

3:19 AM IST More drama. Obus Pienaar was single-handedly taking Washington Freedom to glory, but he can play no further part and has to watch from the outside. Ian Holland is the next man in. 8 needed in 4 balls and it's anyone's game.

Pitched-up delivery, around off, Obus Pienaar strides to the pitch of the ball, gets underneath it and lofts this over deep cover for a massive six. Still work to do for Obus as WF need 8 more to win in 5 balls.

3:16 AM IST It all comes down to the final over of the MLC 2026. Shadley van Schalkwyk will have to bowl it. Can he defend 13 runs here, or will Obus Pienaar take Washington Freedom to the title? Don't forget, if it's a tie, we will have a Super Over, so all three results are possible here.

2:24 AM IST DRINKS! The final is nicely poised at the halfway mark of this chase. Washington Freedom need exactly 100 more runs to win in 60 balls. Despite losing three early wickets, the pair of Andries Gous and Nikhil Chaudhary have got them back on track and will look to extend this stand as long as possible. Sunil Narine has been outstanding, picking up all three wickets, but if Los Angeles Knight Riders are to win this game, the others need to step up as well. They know that if they get a couple of more quick wickets, they can control the match, and that one remaining over of Narine could be key in this final. Ali Khan will bowl after the break.

Massive appeal for caught behind, and the umpire raises his finger after taking his time. However, Mitchell Owen takes the review right away and indicates that it hit his thigh and not the bat. Sunil Narine starts with a floater, full and on off, turns away a shy bit. Owen looks to defend but the ball spins away and looks like he misses it, before Jahmar Hamilton grabs it behind the stumps. UltraEdge shows a flatline and the replay confirms that it hit the back pad. The on-field call is changed to Not Out.
