India vs Australia, T20 World Cup 2024 Highlights: Captain Rohit Sharma starred with a belligerent 92 off 41 balls as India beat Australia by 24 runs. Rohit's knock helped India get to a score of 205/5 in 20 overs. Australia gave the steep target a proper go, largely thanks to Travis Head sending the Indian bowlers everywhere in the first 10 overs of the Australian innings. David Warner fell to Arshdeep Singh in the first over in what could possibly be his last international appearance for Australia but that was followed by an 81-run stand between Head and captain Mitch Marsh which came in just 48 balls. Marsh fell to Kuldeep Yadav in the ninth over thanks to a sensational catch from Axar Patel after which Glenn Maxwell continued to put the pressure on the Indians for a while. However, Kuldeep and Axar helped India claw their way ahead in the middle overs, dismissing Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis respectively after which Head fell on 76 off 43 to Jasprit Bumrah in the 17th over. India eventually won the match and confirmed a spot for themselves in the semifinals while Australia could be knocked out if Afghanistan beat Bangladesh.

Rohit walked out all guns blazing and unleashed carnage on Australia in the first 10 overs after his side were put to bat first by Mitchell Marsh. He smashed 28 of the 29 runs that were scored in the third over of the match bowled by Mitchell Starc. He continued on his merry way after a brief rain break in the next over and blazed a 19-ball half-century.

It was Starc himself who eventually dismissed Rohit but the 37-year-old had hit 92 runs in 41 balls by then, smashing eight sixes and seven fours. Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya continued the carnage after that, although Australia managed to pull things back somewhat between the 15th and 19th overs.

India vs Australia is always a heavyweight clash but not many expected it to be saddled with pressure on one of the teams when the Super 8 groups were decided. Australia's defeat to Afghanistan before this game has put them on shaky ground and it could get even worse for them if they don't beat India today. However, it is not just Rohit Sharma and Co. that threaten them today. Rains lashed St.Lucia on the eve of the match and more is expected during the game itself.

A defeat or a washout would mean that Australia will finish the Super 8 on two or three points respectively. This means that if Afghanistan beat Bangladesh later on in a game that starts at 6am IST, it would be them who would go through and Australia would be out. Australia are the holders of the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup titles and are looking to do a unique treble of holding world titles in all three formats at the same time.

The curator at St Lucia has said that the pitch is nice and hard, should stay the same throughout in a day game. "Whichever team bats should score 180 to 200. I prefer to bat and put runs on the board. England batted poorly. The pitch got a bit tricky and the ball was not coming on," a member of the groundstaff at the Darren Sammy Stadium told PTI.

West Indies scored 218, the highest total of the tournament thus far, in a day-night game with light dew making batting easier. In the only day game held before, South Africa were able to defend 163 against England. It is to be noted that in the England-South Africa day game, the spinners did alright with Keshav Maharaj taking a couple of wickets for the Proteas. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali picked one each. The top dressing of the main square was done five months ago as part of World Cup preparations. Sri Lanka had also managed to amass 201 against the Netherlands here. The wind will be a factor, as was the case in Barbados and Antigua.

India vs Australia Score, T20 World Cup 2024: Australia chasing a unique treble

India vs Australia Score, T20 World Cup 2024: The term ‘treble-winners’ is used most commonly in club football than any other sport but it has been applicable in cricket for a while. No one really managed a treble of holding the ODI and T20I World Cups and the Champions Trophy together. But now, with the addition of the World Test Championship, a treble of the title and the ODI and T20I World Cups really does carry a different meaning to it. That makes the team champions in all formats of the game at the same time and Australia have a chance at doing that if they can get out of the muddle they are currently in and win this T20 World Cup. For they had won the 2023 WTC title and the 2023 ODI World Cup title, remember. Well Indian fans certainly would remember, Australia beat them in the finals both times.

India vs Australia Score, T20 World Cup 2024: Australia in the 2024 T20 World Cup

India vs Australia Score, T20 World Cup 2024: Australia have looked so strong that former captain Ricky Ponting predicted that they could go unbeaten throughout this tournament. Ironically, he said that right before the game against Afghanistan. They started off by thrashing Oman by 39 runs and that was followed by a thumping 36-run win over arch-rivals England. Both these games were played in Barbados. Their next game was in North Sound, Antigua where they beat Namibia by nine wickets after which they beat Scotland by five wickets in St Lucia, a match that went much closer than anybody would have expected. Australia then beat Bangladesh by 28 runs via the DLS method in their first Super 8 match in Antigua and then, horror horror horror, came a stunning 21-run defeat to Afghanistan at Arnos Vale. They were cruising along the Caribbean islands but that one defeat has put them on the brink.

India vs Australia Score, T20 World Cup 2024: India's tournament thus far

India vs Australia Score, T20 World Cup 2024: It is tempting to say that the only seemingly high-profile opponent India have faced thus far in this tournament are Pakistan but the fact remains that Afghanistan, whom they beat comfortably, did pound Australia to submission. India's first game of the tournament was an eight-wicket win over Ireland and that was followed by a thrilling six-run win over Pakistan. They then beat the USA by seven wickets and their last group stage match against Canada was washed out. They then beat Afghanistan by 47 runs in their first Super 8 match and followed that up with a 50-run drubbing of Bangladesh. India played their entire group stage on the treacherous pitches in New York and their washed out match against Canada was in Lauderhill. Their first Super 8 match was in Barbados and the second was in Antigua.

India vs Australia Score, T20 World Cup 2024: Australia's arduous journey to St Lucia

India vs Australia Score, T20 World Cup 2024: Australia's shocker against Afghanistan was in Kingstown and it is only a 12-minute flight from the tiny Argyle International Airport in St Vincent to St Lucia. However, their short flight was delayed by 90 minutes. Moreover, the flight was preceded by a 40 minute drive to the airport and followed by a 90 minute drive to St Lucia and they got into their rooms only on the wee hours of Sunday. While Mitchell Marsh's men were making this hectic journey between the islands, India had taken the day off.

India vs Australia Score, T20 World Cup 2024: Australia had brought in an extra spinner in Ashton Agar in their previous match in St Lucia against Scotland. He had also played in the game against Afghanistan, with Mitchell Starc sitting out. Australia could be tempted to continue with Agar alongside Adam Zampa but considering the stakes riding on this game, will they stick with keeping out one of their most potent match-winners in Starc?
