If nothing else, Axar is a big headache. Add to that his reliability and he makes India’s team look almost flawless.

Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh, who might have to fill in for Jasprit Bumrah during the tournament if the back issue isn't completely resolved, missed out. Just a rotation policy, or an indication of who Gambhir might be looking at just in case Bumrah is forced to sit out of the Champions Trophy?

But is it worth trying out a different combination just in case the UAE pitches require something different?

This is likely the right combination to go with, but Gambhir must simultaneously allow himself to remain flexible on such matters, depending on his reading of the pitch from game to game.
