India vs New Zealand Highlights, 2nd Test, Day 1: Ton-up Mayank, Saha take India to 221/4 at Stumps

A tossed up delivery by William Somerville and Mayank Agarwal charges down the track and converts it into a full toss. Plays it at the mid-wicket region but good fielding by the player present at long-off as two runs come off it. Meanwhile, India reach 48/0. 

Despite a delayed start, India will be happy with the things have fared so far for them. The opening pair of Mayank and Gill have so far added 45 runs together. 

Mayank joined the part with a six smashed high and over the long-off fence. New Zealand have been loose on a couple of deliveries this morning, and India have the most of it every time. India 45/0 in 14 overs

In the second ball after the break, Gill shimmied down the track to loft the delivery from Ajaz Patel over extra cover for a boundary. He then welcomed Kyle Jameison with a boundary down to the third man region. India 39/0

48 per cent of Southee's deliveries today have been on good length and 47 per cent have been fuller. Gill, in a bid to upset Southee's rhythm, has been stepping outside the crease to face the pacer. India 30/0 in 11 overs. Time for drinks break!

Not the shortest delivery from Ajaz, in the final ball of his first over, and Mayank went deep, and on one knee, to force a pull shot only to get the top edge that sent the ball high into the air. Well, there was no fielder, but it was a reckless shot from the opener. India 26/0

India made an impactful start to the second Test and finally Tim Southee manages to register the first maiden over after 36 deliveries. India still 25/0, in 7 overs. Time for some spin as Ajaz Patel is introduced into the attack.

A late push by Mayank Agarwal, just opening the face of his bat. Gets a fine touch and the ball races between the fielder at slips and gully for a four. Meanwhile, Jamieson ends his over with a short ball. IND: 25/0 

Excellent cover drive by Mayank Agarwal but a brilliant effort by the fielder inside the 30-yard-circle prevents the opener form getting a boundary. Meanwhile, just one run come off the over. IND: 21/0 

The runs keep coming. A single from Gill and then Mayank plays the ball in the gap between the fielders on the on-side and take three runs. IND: 20/0 

Mayank Agarwal has now joined the act. The opener plays the ball through the mid-wicket region as Rachin Ravindra tries to stop the ball from reaching the ropes. Throws in a dive but fails to save the four runs. Four runs come off the over. IND: 16/0   

Shubman Gill welcomes Kyle Jamieson with back to back boundaries. The first one on the leg-side and then whacks him on the off-side in the second ball. He then ends the over with a beautiful flick. A total of three boundaries come off Jamieson's first over as IND reach 12/0. 

Hint of movement in the air and good bounce also being generated from the surface as Mayank Agarwal starts cautiously, not disturbing the balls going away from the off stick. Meanwhile, ends the last two balls of the over, pitching it slightly up and trying to get the batter trap LBW.  

India openers Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal walk out in the middle to kick-off the proceedings. New Zealand players also arrive in the middle as Tim Southee will lead the attack for the visitors. 

Jayant Yadav has so far featured in 4 Tests, in which the all-rounder has accumulated 228 runs, which include a century and a half-century. With the ball, he has scalped 11 wickets in the four outings. 

“We would've had a bat too. It's been under covers for a few days, and so it might do a bit early. Unfortunate for Kane, his elbow is acting up again, but good chance for Mitchell. It might swing with the humidity here, and we will get assistance and given the pitch it will spin too. We did well after losing the toss in Kanpur and hopefully we can make use of the conditions here and pick up some early wickets.”

NZ must be given credit for batting out the overs on Day 5. We can be in positions to capitalize at home if we play well.”

After a delayed start we are ready for the toss, will Virat Kohli finally break the toss jinx. Lets find out

“We've had a fair amount of cricket. From my point of view fortunate in a way to have that time off in the World Cup to take a step back and to work on a few things to build my body back over the course of 3 or 4 weeks. It's tough work but looking forward to the challenge today. We came down for lunch yesterday, we played a little bit of cards, been a good chance to take a step back and refresh. It was tough five days up in Kanpur, nice to have a chance to rest and recover and get ready for today. We had two contrasting games (in the IPL, playing at Wankhede), we won by 10 wickets in one and one where it was so hot that we cooked ourselves and got rolled with the bat. Maybe a little bit more for the bowlers here but from what I have been told it does, it can break up and turn as well. For us, it's about trying to adapt and take our game based on what the situation gives us and see what happens. We knew we had two Tests, and we are coming over here to try and win the series, wasn't about drawing the series or just trying to compete. It was about winning a game and winning the series. Certainly lucky to be in a position we are now coming into this Test and we'd be putting our best foot forward in the next five days.”

"Did something happen this morning? But Virat Kohli said nothing about in the press conference yesterday. It is obviously a big blow. Jadeja was injured in that England series and Axar Patel came in and he was named Player of the Series," Laxman said on Byju's Cricket Live on Star Sports.  

"The way he bowled was just fantastic to see. And then you saw Shreyas Iyer, who came in place of Virat Kohli. He straightaway stamped his authority under tremendous pressure. So I guess India have got very good players who can replace players who are missing due to injuries."
