India vs New Zealand Highlights, 2nd Test, Day 1: Ton-up Mayank, Saha take India to 221/4 at Stumps

It has been a good day for India, largely thanks to Mayank Agarwal who stays unbeaten on 120. Shubman Gill (44) made a good start alongside Mayank before both, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli were dismissed on a duck. Shreyas Iyer (18) then helped stabilise the Indian innings with Mayank and Wriddhiman Saha (25*) looked strong as India closed Day 1 on a strong note.

This is confident batting from the Indian opener. Tom Latham brings the fielder from long-off up to mid-on, teasing Mayank to go for a biggie. The opener says thank you and steps out to send a fuller of a length delivery into the stands over the long-off boundary!

Another over from Tim Southee safely negotiated by Mayank. A single off the last ball of the over as Mayank opens the face of the bat to guide the ball through square.

Mayank Agarwal continues to play it safe against the seamers as he doesn't bother fishing for deliveries on the fifth stump line. 

It has been a promising partnership from Mayank and Saha so far, with both batters not shying away from punishing the bad deliveries despite a nervy Day 1 for India. Mayank Agarwal's ton brought an end to an 11-year long home drought of Indian openers scoring a century against New Zealand.

Wriddhiman Saha has looked strong since arriving at the crease. He goes for the paddle sweep again – this time against Ajaz Patel for three runs. 

Ajaz has been the best bowler of the day so far and he beats Mayank's edge straightaway with the delivery turning away. Pitches it a little fuller of good length, drawing Mayank to play forward defence and beats his outside edge.

Ajaz replaces Rachin Ravindra, who had been conceding significantly from the other end.

Wriddhiman Saha is finding a boundary almost every over now. He has hit three fours and a six in his unbeaten 20 so far, as India are closing on the 200-run mark.

WHAT AN INNINGS! 4th Test century for Mayank Agarwal.

Mayank throws a punch in the air and yells loud after reaching the mark with a boundary. One can sense the relief in that celebration – Mayank hasn't been a consistent part of the XI due to his poor outings in his last few Tests, and also lost his place in the side to KL Rahul earlier this year. A remarkable comeback from the opener!

6 runs off Ravindra'as over. It almost seems Saha has continued from his innings in the previous Test. Full from Ravindra and Saha plays a paddle sweep for a boundary.

Mayank Agarwal finishes Rachin Ravindra's over with a four, as he moves to 95. Short from Ravindra and Mayank goes down on one leg and pulls it away from a boundary.

Wriddhiman Saha stands outside his crease against Kyle Jamieson and plays an elegant drive towards the cover region for a four. The timing was so good and it tells that he wants to go big yet again. He had scored 61* in his previous inning in Kanpur. IND: 177-4 

Wriddhiman Saha advances down the track and hits Ajaz Patel for a six straight over his head. Eight runs come off the over. IND: 173-4 

Three runs come off Mayank Agarwal's previous over as IND reach 164/4. He is now 11 runs away from completing his century. 

Refreshments are coming in for the players as India reach 161-4. Mayank Agarwal is batting on 86, while Wriddhiman Saha is yet to open his account. 

Wriddhiman Saha is the new man in as Kyle Jamieson, who is brought back into the attack, starts off with a maiden. IND: 160-4 

Ajaz Patel misses his length and line and pitches it up down the leg side and Shreyas Iyer whacks it for a boundary in the fine-leg region. Meanwhile, the bowler recovers quick and strikes in the following delivery as he breaks the 80-run stand between Mayank Agarwal and Shreyas Iyer. The latter is caught-behind on 18. India lose their fourth wicket. IND: 160-4 

An excellent effort in the deep by Mitchell Santner. Shreyas Iyer goes for the aerial route but finds the fielder right at the boundary rope, who manages to keep the ball in play. Fotunate for the batter that it didn't land in his pouch, could have been an easy catch. 

Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal continues his attack against Somerville and gets a boundary towards the long on fence and then ends the over with a sweep, which fetches another boundary. 150 up for the hosts. IND: 156-3 

It is becoming more and more difficult to keep Mayank Agarwal quiet. He targets William Somerville and the bowler ends up conceding 12 runs. Starts off with a couple, which almost looked like a boundary before a brilliant effort by Ajaz Patel saved two runs for his side. Then follows it up with a gigantic six over the long-on fence. The second boundary of the over comes in the form of byes, as the ball pitched on the leg side beats the wicket-keeper and the leg slip. IND: 144-3 

Mayank Agarwal charges down the track against Ajaz Patel and whacks him over the cover fielder for a boundary. He then hits him again almost in the same region, which also fetches him a boundary. With this the 50-run partnership also come up between him and Shreyas Iyer. IND: 132-3 

The pair of Mayank Agarwal and Shreyas Iyer is keeping the scorecard ticking, a good sign for India. Together they've added 41 runs in very short time. IND: 121-3 

Great timing by Mayank Agarwal on the off-side as he hits the ball between the cover and extra cover fielder. Beats them and races towards the fence for a four. He then nudges the ball for a single as five runs come off the over. IND: 121-3
