IND vs NZ: Kyle Jamieson ahead of the start of play

“We've had a fair amount of cricket. From my point of view fortunate in a way to have that time off in the World Cup to take a step back and to work on a few things to build my body back over the course of 3 or 4 weeks. It's tough work but looking forward to the challenge today. We came down for lunch yesterday, we played a little bit of cards, been a good chance to take a step back and refresh. It was tough five days up in Kanpur, nice to have a chance to rest and recover and get ready for today. We had two contrasting games (in the IPL, playing at Wankhede), we won by 10 wickets in one and one where it was so hot that we cooked ourselves and got rolled with the bat. Maybe a little bit more for the bowlers here but from what I have been told it does, it can break up and turn as well. For us, it's about trying to adapt and take our game based on what the situation gives us and see what happens. We knew we had two Tests, and we are coming over here to try and win the series, wasn't about drawing the series or just trying to compete. It was about winning a game and winning the series. Certainly lucky to be in a position we are now coming into this Test and we'd be putting our best foot forward in the next five days.”

Virat Kohli at the Wankhede Stadium

    Tests: 4

Runs: 433 runs in six innings

    Average: 72.16

    50s/100s: 3/1

"I'm really looking forward to the return of Virat Kohli because we know that he missed the first Test and the T20 series. It has been some time since Virat Kohli got the match at the three-figure mark and we know what a quality player he is. So, I am expecting him to straight away come, and create an impact because we know whenever he plays to his potential, he poses a lot of threat to any bowling unit. So, the player to watch out for me will be Virat Kohli." - VVS Laxman on Follow the Blues show on Star Sports

  • Dec 03, 2021 10:58 AM IST

IND vs NZ: VVS Laxman on India's injury list

"Did something happen this morning? But Virat Kohli said nothing about in the press conference yesterday. It is obviously a big blow. Jadeja was injured in that England series and Axar Patel came in and he was named Player of the Series," Laxman said on Byju's Cricket Live on Star Sports.

"The way he bowled was just fantastic to see. And then you saw Shreyas Iyer, who came in place of Virat Kohli. He straightaway stamped his authority under tremendous pressure. So I guess India have got very good players who can replace players who are missing due to injuries."

And most of it have come – when you think of the one against England earlier this year – came at an important time in Chennai when India were under the pump, behind in the game. Ashwin scored a hundred and turns the game and takes wickets," former New Zealand all-rounder Craig McMillan on cricket.com.

IND vs NZ: Why Kohli’s return becomes more important?

As Team India will miss out on the services of senior batter Ajinkya Rahane and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli’s return becomes more important as it will give the middle-order a formidable look. As per reports, Kane Williamson might not be part of the New Zealand playing XI. The reason behind this is assumed to be the exacerbated condition of his elbow. In his absence Tom Latham will take over as the stand-in skipper.

IND vs NZ: Pitch Report by Ajit Agarkar & Deep Dasgupta

“There's a bit of moisture usually, but this might hold because it's been under the covers. This will certainly spin, because I can see cracks and these will open up with the sun out. Because of the moisture on Day 1, there will be seam, so if you bat first you have to bat well, but you don't want to bat last. This might be a good toss to lose.”

Former England fast bowler Steve Harmison has weighed in on India's potential team combination for the second New Zealand Test, and said that if it was up to him, he would drop both Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane from the XI.

"I think they both make way, there's lots of questions about Rahane and Pujara, they both might make way. I think Suryakumar Yadav, he plays in Mumbai for Mumbai Indians. He was brought into the squad as a replacement for KL Rahul, I think they both [Rahane and Pujara] looked as if they were done, they both walked off the field in that first innings as I they knew it may be the last time they walk off the field for India," the former England pacer said on his YouTube channel while answering questions.
