Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra feels that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) might not be able to chase their star bowler Yuzvendra Chahal in the mega auction for the 2022 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and instead picked the bowler that the franchise will pick as his replacement.
Talking about IPL retention on his YouTube channel, Aakash opined that Chahal might not make the auctions, implying that either of the two new franchises - Lucknow and Ahmedabad - will pick him as part of the IPL retention rules set for them. He added that with Chinnaswamy conditions only favouring leg spinners, RCB will rather go after Rahul Chahar, who was failed to make the retention list of Mumbai Indians.
"RCB will not get Rashid, they can forget about that. Instead, they will go after Rahul Chahar, big time. No spinners apart from leg spinners work at the Chinnaswamy stadium. He also bowls a lot quicker in the air. Ravi Bishnoi is also an option, but I'm thinking Rahul Chahar, they will break the bank for him. Chahal might not make it to the auctions," Chopra said.
Chahal has played in 112 IPL innings for RCB, picking 139 wickets at 22.2. He was also among the top wicket-takers in the UAE leg of IPL 2021 where he picked 14 wickets in eight matches at just 13.1 and at an economy rate of 6.13.

Explaining RCB's retentions, Mike Hesson, director of cricket operations of the Bangalore team, said, "The player retention process has been pretty robust and exhaustive. We’ve got an exceptional bunch of players but the key for us was to ensure we have a sizeable auction purse going into the IPL Mega Auction."
