Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Commentary

5:14 PM IST End of a memorable series - There's only one thing left to do now, and Shaheen Afridi goes on to the podium to lift the series trophy, and his teammates join him for celebrations. With ODIs turning into a rare affair off late, it's been great to see the build-up to next year's ODI World Cup in full swing, with plenty of series going on across the globe. In the end, this tri-series can be considered a resounding success and Pakistan have just reignited hopes of having a well-rounded team in the ODI format, and so have Sri Lanka. Right then, that will be all from our side for this series, but that doesn't mean the cricketing action has to stop. Pakistan and Sri Lanka will soon lock heads yet again, this time in a two-match Test series. The first set is scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi, beginning on Monday, November 9 at 4.30 am GMT. Do join us then for all the action. TAKE CARE! ADIOS!
5:11 PM IST Let's now hear from Kusal Mendis - Sri Lanka's captain, Kusal Mendis, starts off by saying that they were short by 20-25 runs, but he adds that their top order batted really well, and he feels that if they could have pushed a little bit more, they would have gotten a better result. Kusal Mendis then highlights the tactical challenge Sri Lanka faced, noting that managing the fifth bowler was particularly difficult as heavy dew settled on the outfield, an environmental factor he emphasizes the management must carefully plan for moving forward. Despite the setback, Mendis expresses strong satisfaction as captain, pointing out numerous positive individual performances across the squad. He specifically praises Pavan Rathnayake, Kamindu Mendis, and Avishka Fernando for their impactful displays with the bat, while acknowledging that the team will focus on rectifying specific operational areas as they progress in the series.
5:11 PM IST And now, the skipper of Pakistan - Shaheen Afridi says that those wickets at the death with the ball were crucial and knew that the ball would reverse later on. Also adds that they didn't get a good start with the bat yet again, but lauds the way Fakhar Zaman played and calls him a big-game player. Afridi also goes on to talk about the youngsters and commends the likes of Saad Baig, Hasan Nawaz, and Arafat Minhas, and feels that it's a good sign for Pakistan cricket. He ends by saying that he is really happy, as this is the first tri-series win for Pakistan since 2008.
5:08 PM IST Player of the Series - Arafat Minhas gets the accolade for his brilliant all-round showing, picking up 9 wickets and scoring 149 runs. Minhas starts by talking about his batting and says that the team needed him, and they kept believing and managed to win the game. Minhas then goes on to add that it is all about enjoying the pressure and staying calm, and feels that both he and Hasan Nawaz managed to do that. Goes on to add that they knew Sri Lanka were a frontline bowler short, and hence they waited to strike and luckily he managed to get one big over which helped his side get the win. Minhas ends by saying that he's ecstatic that the team won, and wants to be considered a genuine all-rounder.
5:07 PM IST Player of the Match - Fakhar Zaman gets the award for his match-winning knock of 127 off 99 balls. Fakhar Zaman opens by acknowledging that his previous four matches hadn't gone according to plan, making a standout performance in the series feel long overdue. He notes that cricket is inherently a game of fine margins, where a player might click in one match and struggle in the next. Reflecting on his approach, Fakhar emphasizes that his mentality remains constant regardless of recent form, staying perpetually prepared to step up for the team and make a meaningful impact. He highlights that while his aggressive intent never changes from game to game, fortune finally aligned for him today, allowing him to convert that mindset into a match-winning performance on a special occasion. Fakhar then praises young Saad Baig for playing what he considered the standout innings of the match, revealing that their past domestic cricket experience together helped build strong on-field chemistry. Fakhar also notes that he was struggling to find his timing initially, but Saad came in and immediately took the pressure off him with a proactive approach. He adds that had Saad played conservatively, the scoring pressure would have mounted on both of them, crediting his partner's decisive knocks for shifting the momentum of the innings.
