PBKS vs LSG, IPL 2023 Highlights: Lucknow beat Punjab by 56 runs after making 2nd highest score in tournament history

Just two runs came off a brilliant first over from Gurnoor so this is a welcome start to the second. Arshdeep sends a length ball outside off, Mayers drives it on the up through backward point.

Oh that is extraordinary. That was a regulation catch at backward point and Atharva Taide has dropped it. Gurnoor Brar could have had a wicket off his very first ball in the IPL.

LSG have won three and lost two of their last five matches but one of those defeats is the kind that can derail seasons. They inexplicably lost to GT simply because of taking a chase deep when they never needed to. Before that, they beat RR by 10 runs and that game followed their 2-wicket loss in the reverse fixture. LSG beat RCB by 1 wicket in an absolute thriller before that game.

Punjab have won two and lost three of their last five matches. They beat Mumbai Indians by 13 runs in their previous match. Before that, they lost by 24 runs to Royal Challengers Bangalore. That game followed the 2-wicket win they recorded over LSG in the reverse fixture before which they were beaten by Gujarat Titans by six wickets.

Quinton de Kock has struck two fifties in two IPL games in Mohali. He strikes at a rate of 162.32 at the venue. Not that it matters really, because he doesn't seem to be in LSG's plans at the moment. 

The last time Mark Wood played for LSG was in the reverse fixture of this game in Lucknow. Since then, he has not appeared in the playing xi in ajny form and LSG are yet to provide any injury updates. Wonder if he will return today.

PBKS broke the bank for Sam Curran for his batting skills at the death as much as for his bowling. He hasn't been too bad with the ball but Curran's failures with the bat has hurt PBKS this season. And it became amply clear how important it is for them that Curran fires when he finally got a good total up in their previous match against Mumbai Indians. Curran scored 55 in 29 balls and led PBKS to a score of 214/8. It was just too big a total for MI to chase and although they also crossed the 200-run mark, PBKS won by 13 runs.

"Without Shikhar, we know we had to take that responsibility. Our group is coming together really well. Shikhar will be fit soon. We won 4 out of the 7 games and it is not a bad place to be. Have got great support from the management and the local guys. The boys are enjoying themselves, and it is still a long way to go and the important thing is enjoy the game and don't put too much pressure on ourselves."

LSG were utterly dominating their match against Gujarat Titans for almost 45 overs of the game, until KL Rahul seemed to decide that this is the best time to demonstrate his theory that strike rates are overrated in T20 cricket. He had scored 0 off the first 6, 30 off the next 12, 20 off the next 20, 18 off the next 23 and in the end, LSG suddenlyh needed 12 to win off the last over after needing 30 to win off 30 at one point. They lost 4 consecutive wickets in that over, first of which was that of Rahul's, and the captain was left scratching his head and saying, "We don't know what happened." Well, go figure.

Shikhar Dhawan hasn't featured for the Punjab Kings since their game against the Titans on April 13. Under Curran, the Kings have performed reasonably well but miss the solid presence of the star Indian opener at the top order.
