Ben Stewart McKinney, born on October 4, 2004, in Sunderland, grew up in County Durham and joined the Durham academy at age 12. Cricket ran in the family, as his father David and uncle Philip both played minor counties cricket. Standing at an imposing 6 ft 7 in, the left-handed opening batter who also bowls right-arm off-spin played youth football for Sunderland before focusing fully on cricket. He climbed quickly through the age-group ranks, marked out by his immense reach, elegant strokeplay, and tactical maturity.
Leadership came early in his development. Through 2023 and early 2024, he captained the England Under-19 team (Young Lions) in both red-ball and white-ball cricket, leading them to a historic Youth Test win in Australia. He subsequently captained England at the 2024 ICC Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, finishing as the team's leading run-scorer, highlighted by a commanding 135 off 128 balls against Scotland.
At Durham, McKinney signed his first professional contract in 2023 and made his First-Class debut that April against Sussex. His breakthrough arrived in 2024 when he became a regular opener across formats. In August 2024, he struck his maiden List A century against Kent, followed days later by his maiden First-Class century - a brilliant 121 against Nottinghamshire.
Across the 2025 and 2026 seasons, McKinney established himself as one of the premier young talents in English domestic cricket. In April 2026, he posted a career-best First-Class score of 244 against Gloucestershire, earning the County Championship Player of the Round award and signing a contract extension with Durham through the 2028 season.
His game expanded rapidly into short-format franchise leagues and representative setups. In The Hundred, he represented the Manchester Originals in 2025 before moving to the Southern Brave for the 2026 campaign. In addition to his domestic success, his multi-format consistency and boundary-hitting prowess earned him selection for multiple England Lions tours across South Africa and Australia, solidifying his trajectory toward senior international honours.
