A 19-year-old man suffered fractures in his right leg and nose after three inebriated men allegedly thrashed, punched him in his face and ran their car over him during a road rage incident in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar on Thursday night, said police.

Garvit Chawla, son of a businessman from east Delhi’s Surajmal Vihar, was at the Vivekanand College crossing traffic signal around 10.30pm in his Swift car when a speeding Duster car allegedly hit his vehicle from behind, said Nupur Prasad, deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara district). “Chawla, who was at the wheel, suffered injuries in his back due to the impact. He was on his way to his friend’s house,” said Prasad.

As the traffic signal turned green, Chawla parked his car on the roadside. He stepped out and stood in front of the Duster car which allegedly had the three inebriated men, a police officer said.

When Chawla took out his mobile phone to call the police, the three men stepped out and allegedly started thrashing, and punching him in his face.“They tried to snatch my son’s phone. When he resisted, they pushed him down on the road. The Duster driver then ran his vehicle over my son’s leg,” Garvit’s mother, Anju Chawla, told Hindustan Times.

Chawla screamed for help and some passersby and locals rushed to his rescue. Eyewitnesses told police that some of the locals caught the Duster car’s driver, later identified as Gaurav Chaudhary, and started allegedly beating him. The other two accused men managed to flee, the police said.

The locals also damaged the Duster car’s front and rear windscreens with bricks and stones, said police.

A police team arrived after receiving a call from a local and took Chaudhary in custody. His questioning led to the identification of his two accomplices, Aditya and Uday. The two were arrested on Friday morning. The trio was booked for attempt to culpable homicide, rash driving and drink driving.

During interrogation, the three told police that they were returning home from a party at a nightclub in Vivek Vihar.

Chaudhary had failed to see the Swift car as he was driving under the influence of alcohol, the officer said.

Chaudhary is an interior designer and a resident of Kalkaji, Aditya is a building contractor from Vasant Kunj, and Uday is from Krishna Nagar and is unemployed, said police. The police have not shared the last names of Aditya and Uday.

DCP Prasad said that the Duster car belonged to Uday. “The three accused men’s medical examination reports confirmed that they were drunk at the time of the crime. We have also impounded the Duster car,” added Prasad.

Chawla’s father, Pawan Chawla, runs an electronic showroom in Noida. Chawla has two sisters. The youth was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital. His family members said he will undergo a surgery.
