According to figures compiled by the Delhi Police, cases of unnatural sex, mainly sodomy — recently manifested in the abduction, and ultimately, the murder of two young siblings of each gender reported from east Delhi's Usmanpur in late September — are the highest since 2009. "Throughout 2011, 76 cases had been registered under section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This year, however, even with an entire month to go till year-end, 85 cases had been reported -- an increase of around 15 per cent, till November 30," said an officer.

On October 4, 20-year-old Mohammad Sadab, a drug-crazed barber and his tailor friend Mohammad Mia, 19, were arrested for abducting, sexually assaulting and finally killing three minors, including two girls, over two consecutive days in Usmanpur. At the end of their first gruesome campaign on the evening of October 1, police said, the men had settled for girls when their attempt to abduct two young boys, including a 10-year-old had failed.

In 2009, 63 cases of unnatural sex were reported with the number declining slightly to 59 in 2010. This year, however, with a monthly average of a little more than seven such

cases being reported, police expect the figure might 'officially' cross the 100 mark for the first time ever in Delhi.

"While sexual assault of a heterosexual nature is certainly traumatic, for the family of a victim of unnatural sex, the social stigma involved in even accepting the fact that one's kin has been subjected to sexual assault of a homosexual nature is too much to handle, making a majority of them brush it under the carpet instead of reporting it," the officer added.
