12-year-old dies after falling into open pit in Delhi

A 12-year-old girl lost her life after she fell into an open pit filled with water in south Delhi on Wednesday, police said.

A 12-year-old girl lost her life after she fell into an open pit filled with water in south Delhi on Wednesday, police said.

The victim identified as Kaku was playing with other children when she fell into the pit near the Kalkaji temple in Astha Kunj area at 1.55 p.m.

She was a resident of a nearby slum area.

The other children raised an alarm and the officials of the Delhi Fire Service and police were pressed into service to rescue her.

She was fished out of the water after one and half hours and was rushed to the Safdarjung hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

Her father Gopal said the pit has been dug for the past some time and despite several complaints to authorities it was not covered.

Police officials said they were investigating the death.
