500 vehicles fined in 2 hours
Delhi traffic police on Tuesday night made a record by prosecuting about 500 commercial vehicles within two hours. This, according to them, is a step towards bringing down the number of road accidents. Police collected about Rs 10 lakh in fines.

Every year over 2,000 road accidents take place in Delhi. This year the police hope to bring down the number to less than 1,600.
“The first half of the year has shown a steep decline in fatal road accidents. The figure, 916, is much lower than the average of previous years. We aim to bring it down further by prosecuting violators, especially drink drivers and errant commercial vehicles,” said a senior officer of Delhi police.
The Supreme Court has laid down four types of restrictions. These include speed restrictions, compulsory lane driving, no overtaking of other vehicles from the wrong side, and a ban on picking up passengers from places other than bus stops.
On Tuesday, 178 vehicles were caught for violating Supreme Court norms.
Vehicles violating these norms can be fined for Rs 2,000 and can even be impounded.
“Permits of violating vehicles may be suspended for a month,” said joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Garg.
Garg said during Tuesday’s drive maximum prosecutions took place in the southern range, while the eastern range saw minimum prosecutions.
“It is established that maximum road accidents take place due to driving under the influence of alcohol and violation by commercial vehicles. Now we have intensified our checks to bring down road fatalities. We conduct night checking to prosecute law violating commercial vehicles at least four times a week and drunk drivers at least twice a week,” Garg added.
According to the latest report by the National Crime Record Bureau, in 2009 Delhi topped the metros in road fatalities.
