Delhi University law faculty aspirants have started a hunger strike against the delay in counselling for admission and the proposal to reduce seats.

The university will only admit 1,440 students as against the 2,310 seats declared by DU. As the university law faculty does not have any affiliation, it will have to follow BCI norms.

In a report sent to the university, the Bar Council of India (BCI) said there can be only 8 sections with 60 students in each of the three centres.

Due to this legal hurdle, the admission counselling has not taken place. Students have started the strike to put pressure on the administration to take some action.

“This was the only means that we could adopt. The BCI is not saying anything, the university does not want to tell us. It is already mid-August and admission still not taken place,” said Gorav Arora, an aspirant from Faridabad.

Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) members joined them and asked DU to start the admission process immediately.

The National Students Union of India (NSUI), a student wing of the Congress, had begun their hunger strike on Friday.

The dean of the faculty, SC Raina, said the university was working on the matter.

“As it is an issue of several years, it takes time to resolve. The university will do everything for the welfare of the students,” said Raina.
